Travel back in time and enjoy a ride on a heritage train with Goldfields Railway. Journey between Waihi and Waikino at either end of the spectacular Karangahake Gorge.
Wheelchair facilities are available at both stations, with special passenger car available by prior arrangement. This is a vintage 1913 carriage originally designed as a First Class Day Car, now used for visitors with mobility difficulties wishing to experience Waihi's rail heritage. Experience a section of what used to be known as the East Coast Main Trunk Line which stretched from Auckland to Taneatua south of Te Puke. Enjoy an area rich in history, including historic goldmining which shaped much of this part of the Southern Coromandel.
The Waikino Station Cafe is easily accessible, with a free car park with designated accessible parking and easy ramped access to the cafe. There are interesting photos and information boards to look at in the cafe, and the menu is home made and excellent. There is an accessible toilet facility, with grab support handle beside the toilet and and larger area, however, the doorways openings are only 670mm wide, so may not be accessible for some wheelchairs. 500 metres there is the Karanghake Gorge car park with accessible toilet facilities and wider doors.
You can commence your Hauraki Rail Trail journey through the Karangahake Gorge either and on to either Paeroa, Thames or Te Aroha.
